Was the American Revolution an Act of Rebellion Against God?

Romans 13:1 which says, “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.” I understand the argument and I can see where the thoughts come from but I feel that this idea is a misunderstanding of the roots of the American Revolution and of what the Bible teaches about governmental authority.
